RICHARD HOWELL 1996 Cedar Top Classical Guitar
Here is a rare opportunity to buy a fantastic classical guitar by Richard Howell for $3600 less than what his new instruments will cost you ($8500) through Guitar Salon International. The scale length is 650 mm, the nut width is 52mm and the string spacing is 45mm. The back and sides are made from Indian rosewood , the fret board is ebony and the tuners are made by Sloan.
Before purchasing this instrument, I learned through email correspondence with Richard Howell, that in 1996 he was building with the same design as his current guitars. Being completely hand crafted, naturally each instrument will vary. The Guitar Salon International considered this instrument to be a typical and great sounding Howell with their general description as follows:
"We consider Howell to be the best traditional guitar maker in Australia. His guitars are very inspired by Fleta, but after comparing one to a 1987 Fleta we recently had, one can see that he has clearly established his own style and characteristics. It has great volume, like Fleta, but has a darker voice, and a very deep resonance, sounding more cello-like. We have often thought that this is the best guitar in the world to play the Bach cello suites. Using almost no power tools, this maker manages to produce on of the most beautiful and traditional finishes in the world - warm and lustrous, making them among the best hand-made and hand-finished guitars in our inventory today. They are also a pleasure to play and a wonderful complement to the brighter and more lightweight spruce-top guitars from northern Europe."
I have recorded MP3 audio samples of this Howell guitar played in various registrars. Hearing these should give you an real sense of this instrument's unique and beautiful voice. I have owned several early model Robert Ruck guitars which I find to be similar in sound. It is a colorful and penetrating quality with fullness, depth and clarity of sound.
When I purchased this guitar, I was fully aware of the nail marks and the scratch on the top. The most important quality for me is the sound and so at the greatly reduced price, I was able to over look these cosmetic flaws (done by a previous owner). My sales price also reflects and passes even more substantial savings onto the next buyer. There are no cracks or structural damage and the back and sides are nearly perfect. The photos offer a close view of the details. The action, frets and playability are superb. The original Howell guitar case is included in the deal. Additional photos can be emailed upon request.
I reluctantly offer this guitar for sale to raise travel funds for an upcoming vacation.
