In 1986, Vance moved from the mainland USA to Hawaii. As a classical guitarist on Maui, he has performed long-term engagements at Four Seasons Resort, Gerard's French Restaurant, Ritz Carlton Kapalua, and The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui.
While growing up in Tucson, Arizona, Vance's fascination with the guitar began at an early age under the guidance of Philip Swartz. While in high school, he played in various rock bands and after graduation, decided to dedicate himself to a music career. He attended The Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and also took private classical guitar lessons at the New England Conservatory of Music. Vance then spent several summers studying classical guitar under Oscar Ghiglia, Eliot Fisk and Philip de Fremery at The Aspen School of Music in Colorado. Subsequently, he participated in master classes with other great musicians such as Pepe Romero and Abel Carlevaro.
While living on the mainland, Vance performed extensively in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Florida, Washington and Alaska. Engagements included formal concerts, artists in service programs, prominent public and private performances at resorts, restaurants, libraries, schools etc. He has also appeared on radio and television and was featured on an hour long PBS special with flutist Warren Weisbach.
Vance has recorded a number of album projects. Most recently, he and violinist partner Don V. Lax have released Kiss of Fire (tangos, waltzes and gypsy music) and Romantic Dreams (music from Andrea Boccelli's repertoire).
